Are You Being Too Picky?

I have several friends that are looking for jobs. They come from different situations, some are currently employed, some are employed and some are fresh out of college. Although the job market seems to be improving all of these people are still struggling to find jobs. Most have increased their initial job search. Meaning they have expanded the area that they are looking in, they have expanded the type of jobs they are applying for and they are looking at slightly lower paying jobs than they were before. others are not doing this.

When it comes to looking and finding that job can you afford to be picky? Sometimes the answer is yes. If you have a great position or a steady job you may be more reluctant to leave that job for one does not have good benefits or stability even if the pay is a bit higher. your job search may not be as wide.

But if you do not have a job currently you may not be able to afford to be as picky. It is important to take care of yourself financially. Sometimes when you first graduate you take a job with slightly less pay than you originally thought because the experience will help you qualify for better jobs in the future. You do not want to sell yourself short when you are looking for a job and get something where you are severely underpaid for your qualifications, but an entry level position does make sense when you are first out of school.

It is also important to be actively looking and applying for jobs, if you do not have a job. You can use your contacts and network and hope that something comes through, but you should never become too dependent on the promise of one contact. Stuff happens, the company may choose to freeze hiring or someone with stronger qualifications may interview as well. Stay active with your job hunt until you find a job
